thanks for this brief review. we'll be looking forward to your impressions of the final release when it comes out in late April.
I have a feet-tall stack of linux distros downloaded from the net and burned to CD. Most boot up their live CD's on three different machines I tried them on (2desktops and one laptop.) And the best distro, in terms of compatibility was Ubuntu followed a close second by PCLinuxOS. Since then I dual boot WinXP and Edubuntu on my laptop and desktop at home. I have a total of 5 weeks experience with Linux and have already used my Edubuntu laptop to conduct 4 presentations on OpenOffice without a hitch whatsoever, in a professional setting. This convinced me that I can take Ubuntu a looong way ahead in the future.
There are annoyances (like the hair-splitting difficulty updating behind a corp proxy) but overall, if gutsy is any indication, yeah I agree with you. Ubuntu has excellent features. I am looking forward to the same if not more functionality in Hardy. The default, select software upon installation is well-thought out. I truly love OpenOffice. It's amazing!
God bless all open source developers and advocates. May your tribe increase!
